Ericka J. Thomas joined Ottosen Britz Kelly Cooper & Gilbert, Ltd. in April 1998. Ms. Thomas graduated from Indiana University in 1989 with a B.S. from the School of Business. After receiving her J.D. degree from Valparaiso University in 1992, Ms. Thomas began working at the Macon County State's Attorney's Office as an Assistant State's Attorney. During the next five years, Ms. Thomas tried over one hundred and twenty jury trials in Macon County, including six homicide trials. During her last two years in Macon County, Ms. Thomas concentrated her practice in the prosecution of child sex offenders.
In addition to her trial work, Ms. Thomas was the supervisor of the Misdemeanor, Traffic and Juvenile Divisions of the office and headed up the Domestic Violence unit. Ms. Thomas was also key in the formulation and training of local law enforcement personnel in a breakthrough evidence gathering technique to aid in the prosecution of domestic violence cases.
Ms. Thomas is admitted to the bar in the State of Illinois, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois (including trial bar), and the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois. She is also a member of the Illinois State Bar Association and the DuPage Association of Women Lawyers. Ms. Thomas concentrates her practice in all areas of litigation, including insurance defense, village prosecution, civil rights defense, and administrative hearings.
